Healthier Black Elders Center (HBEC) 6th Annual Health Reception

HBEC 6th Annual Health Reception Hosted by Wayne State University and the University of Michigan has a NEW HOME this year. Bert’s Warehouse Theater, nestled in the heart of the historic Eastern Market and flanked by vendors of fresh foods and live flowers, will house the event and its estimated 1,000 attendees this June. All senior citizens are invited to share a FREE sit-down lunch, live music, dancing, exercise, and a variety of health screenings and information. Keynote Speakers: Dr. Robert Chapman, Director of the Josephine Ford Cancer Center, Henry Ford Health System Mr. Jay Butler, Radio Personality & Program Director, WLQV. Chatters, Harold W. Neighbors, Carmen Green PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS: James S. Jackson University of Michigan Institute for Social Research Program for Research on Black Americans Peter Lichtenberg Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology Application Deadline: April 2, 2008 WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES: • Identify and mentor investigators of multi-cultural backgrounds who are committed to conducting African American aging research • Contribute to the improvement of the quality and quantity of research conducted with the African American aging population ELIGIBILITY: • Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree, or be a Ph.D. candidate • U.S. citizen or permanent resident STIPENDS: • Six stipends (of $1,250 each) will be awarded to those chosen to attend the 2006 training workshop to defray travel and hotel expenses. HOW TO APPLY: If you are interested in being considered for this workshop, please apply by mailing one copy of the following materials to PRBA (address below): • An application in which you concisely describe your research plans, detailing your current level of preparation for rigorous research, and stating how participation in this workshop would be advantageous to our professional growth (no more than 2-3 pages). • A current curriculum vitae. • The name and phone number or e-mail of one person who can speak of your research potential. • One example of a research manuscript demonstrating your potential for rigorous social science research (e.g., dissertation abstract, chapter, article, or conference paper).
