African American elders, especially, are desperately needed to participate in research related to good health and the prevention of diseases that disproportionately affect their population. HBEC's mission is to create a healthier Detroit. The Center's goal is to recruit African American seniors aged 55 and older through outreach efforts, such as community learning forums and annual health receptions, into their Participant Resource Pool.
As a community outreach specialist, Karen has helped to create partnerships with numerous community-based organizations and older African Americans throughout the metropolitan Detroit area. Karen has also successfully helped with the recruitment and retention of older African Americans into HBEC’s participant resource pool.
