Supplemental Trainee Travel Award 2010-2011

The Institute of Gerontology’s Supplemental Trainee Travel fund provides financial support for students in the Pre-doctoral Training Program to present original research at scholarly meetings. One of the core objectives of IOG’s Pre-doctoral Training Program is to provide students with opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary gerontology conferences like the GSA. However, we also recognize the importance of disciplinary and professional conferences. The Supplemental Trainee Travel Award addresses this need  and provides financial support to assist students with travel to these additional scientific meetings.

Scope
The Trainee Travel Award provides up to $1,200 in each semester. Up to four (4) awards of $300 each will be made in October and in February each year.

  • Funds can only be used for costs associated with conference attendance including abstract submission fees, poster printing, conference registration, transportation, and lodging.
  • Funding requests must conform to all WSU travel policies and procedures.

Eligibility

  • Funds are for 1st authors of accepted presentations only.
  • All pre-doctoral students officially in the training program are eligible, regardless of the source of their funding (T32, GRA, GTA, etc.).
  • Presentations must be at national or international (not local) scientific meetings.

Application Procedure

  • Application deadlines: October 1, 2010 and February 1, 2011.
  • Applications are made via email, and must include: presentation title, abstract, authors, conference title and dates, the link to the conference website, and the trainee’s plan and time-frame for developing a manuscript from the presentation and publishing it in a peer-reviewed journal.
  •  Apply via email to the Dr. Cathy Lysack at c.lysack@wayne.edu

Funding Criteria

  • Applications must include written confirmation (an email is fine) of matching funds from at least one other source (e.g., student’s IOG faculty mentor, departmental PhD advisor, one’s departmental or the WSU Graduate School Travel Award, etc).
  • Applications will be judged on scholarly contribution, innovation and methodological rigor.
  •  Students who receive this Award in a one application cycle are eligible to apply in later cycles but they will receive lower funding priority than students who have not been recently funded.

Award Decisions

  • Award decisions are made by the Co-Directors of the Training Program, Dr. Peter Lichtenberg and Dr. Cathy Lysack, in consultation with the training faculty.
  • Award decisions are announced within 1 week following the application deadlines.

Note: The Supplemental Trainee Travel Award is contingent on the IOG budget. Thus, the Award is subject to annual review to ensure sufficient funds.

* This Fund does not provide support for participation in the Annual Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) which is supported by a separate funding mechanism.
