Brain Aging

A Wayne State University researcher needs volunteers for a federally funded study on the relationship between brain, memory, and perceptual-motor skills in healthy aging.

The study will involve 6 hours of paper-and-pencil and computerized tests (three two-hour sessions), and an MRI brain scan (free of charge). Subjects must be right-handed native English speakers with no history of neurological or cardiovascular disease.

There are no medications, invasive procedures, or known health risks associated with this study. Volunteers will be paid $12 per hour plus reimbursement for parking expenses. Scheduling is flexible and will accommodate individual needs.

For more information, call (313)
664-2649

and ask for the "Aging Brain" study.

Brain Imaging Research Study

We are conducting a research study to determine which parts of the brain are used to find your way through the environment and remember where you are going. Eligible participants will perform pencil and paper and computerized tests of learning and memory. Some participants may be eligible to receive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the brain so that we can look at your brain function. We are looking for men and women who are:

• In generally good physical health
• 50 years of age and older

You will be reimbursed for your participation

If you are interested in learning more about our study, please contact us at (313) 664-2648, ask about the Brain Imaging Research Study or  download our flyer in PDF format.

Spatial Navigation Research Study

We are conducting a research study to determine how people find their way through the environment. Eligible participants will perform a computerized “virtual reality” spatial learning task along with other cognitive tasks. We are looking for volunteers who are:

• In generally good physical health
• At least 55 years of age
• Right-handed

You will be compensated $10 per hour for your participation in a 2-3 hour study

If you are interested in participating, please download our flyer in PDF format,  email us or call us at (313) 664-2648.

Healthier Black Elders Center (HBEC)

The Participant Resource Pool was created by the Healthier Black Elders Center to assist in the effective resolution of problems associated with the health of minorities. Through the Participant Resource Pool, researchers have access to people who are ready and willing to participate in research.

At the present time, HBEC is trying to recruit 1,000 older African American men and women who are willing to participate in non-invasive research. All individuals in the database complete an entry survey, which can be finished in approximately 5-10 minutes.

The Participant Resource Pool has an oversight committee that manages access to the pool and use of the database. The committee is comprised of nine individuals, five of whom are from the community (Dr. Joanne Benton, Mrs. Joyce Keener, Mr. James Bridgforth, Mr. Chester Johnson and Mr. John Villa). These individuals will ensure that the safety and protection of the participants and the quality and integrity of the research is maintained.
