IOG Student Research Poster Session

MARK YOUR CALENDAR
CHALLENGE YOUR THINKING

Wondering what's new in the field of aging? Curious about the direction of current research on topics like the maturing brain and preventing depression and dementia as we age? Wayne State University's Institute of Gerontology invites you to satisfy that curiosity by meeting tomorrow's leaders in gerontology at a research poster session on Thursday, October 25, from 3:00 to 4:30pm at the McGregor Conference Center.

At this annual event, about 20 students display the details of their current research projects on large, easy-to-read boards. Students are on hand to guide visitors through the research and answer questions. This "research with a personal touch" forces students to translate their work into concepts the public can understand. "Everyone benefits from these kinds of interactions," said Peter Lichtenberg, Ph.D., director of the IOG. "Students learn presentation skills. Visitors glimpse the inner workings of research and the important issues of the future. We must continuously bring research concepts to the public so they see the value of education and funding."

In addition to the poster displays, a brief ceremony will be held at 4:00pm to honor former director of education, Dr. Jennifer Mendez, for her leadership and accomplishments at the IOG over the past eight years. Dr. Mendez has taken a position with Wayne State's School of Medicine.

All posters are professionally reviewed and judged for a possible monetary award. This year's topics include the personal effects of HIV on African Americans, caregiving for Alzheimer's Disease, treating depression in assisted living residences, and how chemotherapy in the elderly affects thinking skills.

"You realize that the best understanding of your research comes when you can explain it to people from other disciplines or from the community," said an IOG postdoctoral student who has presented at several sessions.

IOG staff and faculty will also attend to answer questions and offer information about aging. Learn more about the mission, activities and accomplishments of the IOG at:
